Nihilists believe that life is meaningless and there is no point in trying to find purpose, while stoics believe in accepting what is and making the best of it.

Nihilism

Nihilism is the belief that nothing has inherent meaning or value. This philosophy of nihilism can be used to describe the belief that life is meaningless, that there is no point to living, and that one might as well end their life now because it will eventually end anyway.

Stoicism

Stoicism is the belief that some things do have inherent meaning and value even though life will eventually end. Stoicism is the philosophy that holds that the best way to deal with difficult situations is to remain calm and rational. The goal is to be in control of one’s emotions and not be swayed by them. This approach can be helpful in dealing with problems but it can also lead to a detached view of life.

The difference between nihilism and stoicism

Nihilism is the belief that nothing has inherent meaning or value. This perspective leads to a sense of despair because life can feel pointless. In contrast, stoicism is the philosophy that holds that the only things in life that have true value are our thoughts and actions. This means that we can control our destiny by choosing our thoughts and actions carefully. While stoicism may sound pessimistic, it leads to a more optimistic outlook on life because we are in control of our happiness.

Is stoicism compatible with nihilism?

At its core, nihilism is the belief that life is ultimately meaningless. This isn’t to say that nihilists don’t believe in things like love or happiness, but rather that they believe these things are ultimately fleeting and do not give life any lasting purpose or value. For the nihilist, then, the best way to live is simply to enjoy the moment and accept that nothing truly matters in the grand scheme of things.

Stoicism, on the other hand, is a system of thought that emphasizes the importance of virtue and self-control. Stoics believed that by living a virtuous life and controlling their emotions, they could achieve a state of peace and contentment regardless of external circumstances. Unlike nihilists, stoics do not believe that life was ultimately meaningless; instead, they believe that it is our responsibility to make our lives as meaningful as possible.

Do nihilists believe in love?

There is no definitive answer to this question as nihilism is not a unified philosophical doctrine with a set of agreed-upon beliefs. Some nihilists may believe in love while others may not; it ultimately depends on the individual nihilist’s worldview and what they believe is important or meaningful.

That said, many nihilists do seem to eschew love as a concept, feeling that it is an irrational and emotional response that has no place in a world that is ultimately meaningless. For these nihilists, love is seen as a distraction from the more important task of living in accordance with one’s values and principles.
