The Cello vs The Double Bass

Additionally, the range of the double bass is much greater than that of the cello; while most cellists play in the first or second position (meaning they place their left hand on either the first or second fret), double bassists often play in the fifth or seventh position (meaning they place their left hand on either the fifth or seventh fret). This extended range allows for greater melodic possibilities on the double bass.
The other main difference between the two instruments is the range of notes they can play. The cello has a much higher range than the double bass – it can play notes that are more than an octave higher than the double bass.

If you’re not sure which method you’d prefer, it might be worth trying out both before making your decision.
Cost can also be a factor to consider – cellos are generally more expensive than double basses, so if you’re on a budget, the latter might be a better option.
